SMT will provide fan-engagement technology solutions for NBC Sports Group’s broadcast of the 150th Belmont Stakes. This year marks the eighth consecutive Triple Crown collaboration between SMT and NBC Sports Group and is particularly exciting as Justify seeks to become only the second horse since 1978 to win a Triple Crown.
Much like the Preakness Stakes and the Kentucky Derby, SMT’s suite of products will engage viewers from gate to finish with real-time, data-driven graphics, up-to-the-second odds, and commentator analysis.
SMT’s Live Leaderboard System highlights the running order of the top six horses using positional data updated 30 times per second per horse, ensuring accuracy and speed for SMT’s on-air graphic presentation.
SMT’s ISO Track system identifies the horses and incorporates real-time data such as speed, current standing, and distance from finish line into an on-air pointer graphic, helping viewers follow the action during the race.
SMT’s ticker produces an on-air display of real-time odds and bet payouts using live data from the race’s Tote provider (in-house wagering system). The ticker also curates and visually displays social media feeds that give followers an inside look at happenings at the track.
SMT’s Track Map System gives viewers a display of the lead horse’s real-time position and split times via an on-screen graphic.
SMT’s Betting and Social Media GOTO video board features real-time odds and bet payouts for all the races throughout the day. The system provides an interactive system for talent to explain the process of horse wagering.
The Data Matrix Switchboard (DMX) provides a customized solution for each Triple Crown race, absorbing, collating, and synchronizing live data feeds into SMT’s proprietary horse racing database. The DMX integrates live data for on-air and off-air graphics in real-time and replay modes, enhancing NBC’s live race presentation and pre- and post-race analysis. These displays also feature real-time advanced odds and minutes-to-post countdowns.
“With a Triple Crown in play for the second time in four years, SMT has another unique chance to help document a historic moment,” says Ben Hayes, Manager, Client Services, SMT. “Our systems help novice race fans understand the core aspects of the sport, while also providing in-depth betting and live race analysis for racing aficionados.”
