SMT partners with New York Road Runners to provide real-time content and analytics for the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon
New York, N.Y., Nov. 2, 2015 –SMT (SportsMEDIA Technology), the leading innovator in real-time data delivery and graphics solutions for the sports and entertainment industries, provided course-wide solutions for New York Road Runners (NYRR) for Sunday’s 2015 TCS New York City Marathon.
Fans, athletes and press were welcomed to the new TCS New York City Marathon Pavilion in Central Park where the fan-interaction area prominently featured SMT’s 15-by-50 foot projection screen displaying an array of SMT-produced race-related and entertainment content. Also available to the fans were six SMT-powered interactive kiosks providing detailed information about the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon.
Athletes entering the TCS New York City Marathon Health and Wellness Expo in the Javits Center were welcomed by SMT’s 18-by-32 foot LED display with content designed to help them navigate the registration process. Within the Javits Center, there were six interactive kiosks displaying course maps, hydration stations, entertainment stations, volunteer stations and transportation information.
Athletes also took advantage of NYRR’s new Course Strategy Sessions, an SMT-produced 6-by-11 foot display controlled by NYRR coaches using an interactive touch screen designed to help runners calculate their best strategies by assessing various challenges along the course.
NYRR used 13 other SMT video displays stationed along the 26.2-mile, five-borough race course to display a variety of continuously updated content designed to keep the estimated 50,000 runners and one million supporters informed and entertained, including:
- TCS Runfographics, a series of informative illustrations containing factoids, insights, and historical race data;
- Every athlete’s statistical data (number of miles run, steps taken, calories burned) collected from chip times at every mile marker and 5k split;
- Live leaderboards;
- Broadcast and social media feeds; and
- Sponsor messages and NYRR public service messages.
These displays were located in each of the four runner villages at the start line; one each in the fan zones in the Brooklyn and Manhattan areas of the course; and three displays near the finish line in Central Park. Two 80-foot wide LED track boards flanked runners as they make their way to the finish line, while a 25-foot ribbon board suspended from the photo bridge just beyond the finish line showed runner clocks for each of the eight waves.
“With SMT’s services, we are able to engage and inform marathon participants like never before,” said Ronnie Tucker, Vice President of Marketing & Digital, Brand Marketing and Communications for New York Road Runners. “Whether a runner or a fan, having immediate access to live leaderboards, runner stats and social media updates through SMT’s course-wide displays enriches the overall experience of the TCS New York City Marathon.”
“We are proud to partner with the TCS New York City Marathon to help bring real-time content and analytics to this year’s race,” said David Lunghino, Vice President, Business Development Manager for SMT. “Our productions enable everyone attending the race to experience incredible, up-close views of all the happenings on the 26.2-mile course through sophisticated, yet easy-to-read data-fed graphics displayed on state-of-the-art video boards.”
