SMT CUSTOMIZES ITS CORE TECHNOLOGY FOR COSWORTH TELEMETRY SYSTEM FOR INDY 500
DURHAM, N.C. (May 25, 2012) — SMT, the award-winning and leading provider of data integration, graphics presentation, and video enhancement solutions to live sports television, today announced that it has updated its Data Matrix Switchboard (DMX) racing product to support a new, cellular-based Cosworth telemetry system for IndyCar.
This DMX modification allows SMT to offer ESPN on ABC and NBC Sports Network a host of graphical enhancements to improve all of the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series broadcasts, beginning with this weekend’s Indianapolis 500. The updated DMX will allow ESPN on ABC’s coverage of Sunday’s 96th running of the Indy 500 to present teams, fans and viewers with access to car performance data that have never been offered. SMT has supported broadcasts of the Indianapolis 500 and qualifying races since 1995.
SMT engineers collaborated with Cosworth’s engineers to fine-tune the data feed from the new cellular-based Cosworth telemetry system which will be running live for the first time at the Indy 500.
“We are very excited about what the new Cosworth telemetry system can mean to the presentation of IndyCar,” said SMT President and CEO Gerard J. Hall. “The cellular aspect alone is a huge upgrade over the low-bandwith radio system of past years. The Cosworth cellular telemetry system offers 100 percent coverage from 100 percent of the cars, 100 percent of the time – this is unprecedented and represents a lot of useful data to be processed from each car.”
“SMT will be creating new ways to display each piece of critical performance data as it becomes available through the Cosworth system throughout the course of the season,” said Hall.
Thomas Buckler, Sport Business Unit Leader for Cosworth offered, “We have been pleased to work with SMT to ensure that our new 4G telemetry system provides the right data for SMT to create some great on-screen graphics for IndyCar broadcast partners. SMT has provided valuable input and helped Cosworth to raise the bar in terms of the robustness and data richness of the telemetry system that we are providing to IndyCar.”
IndyCar’s 2012 season is highlighted by implementation of the new ICONIC Car, the biggest change to the sport in recent history.
