IDS’ Megatron Video Board debuts at Nike U.S. Open of Surfing
DURHAM, N.C. (August 1, 2012) — IDS (Information and Display Systems), a division of SMT and a leading global provider of technology solutions for the sports industry, is making its debut at the Nike U.S. Open of Surfing, providing video production services on its Megatron, an enormous 91-foot wide video display board that serves as the sports festival’s nerve center.
Believed to be the sport’s largest, the video board not only greets the more than 750,000 fans expected during the nine-day event, it is also a popular meeting place for fans. The event, taking place at California’s historic Huntington Beach Pier, concludes Sunday.
Led by seasoned project manager Steve Kemper, a five-member IDS team is assisting IMG’s Action Sports Division in providing live score and draw information from the four surfing competitions (men’s, women’s, junior men’s and junior women’s), as well as results from the Converse Coastal Carnage street skateboard and bowl skateboard competitions.
In addition, along with three different streams of live competition video, the board displays live social media content (Instagram, Facebook and Twitter) via a Nike application called Fuelstream, as well as results from a popular fan interaction game called Score Card. A steady stream of players line up each day to get their Score Card, then check in at various kiosks around the 14-acre site to earn points from popular surfing brand Hurley for hats, glasses and other prizes.
The festival, surfing’s largest event, and the Megatron are sponsored by Nike, which expects a strong brand impact among its young target audience (16-30). The festival, with live bands, art and more, is being live-streamed, with some portions televised on Fuel and CBS. The Men’s U.S. Open showcases 240 competitors and a $400,000 purse while the women’s division offers $30,000 in cash prizes to its field of 60 women.
“The Megatron video board is a large, fan-involving display with a high level of dynamic and changing content that effectively captures the attention of this tech-savvy crowd,” said David D. Lunghino, vice president of business development for IDS. “IDS is proud of its contribution in helping to create a signature landmark and, frankly, a conversation piece that didn’t previously exist. The feedback we have received from IMG and Nike has been universally positive, and the Megatron has been well received by the fans.
